There is also a picture of Jessica. The link is at the bottom of the page. Sure sounds like she's been busy with her foundation.

WVU student named Jessica Lynch Foundation Scholar

A West Virginia University student has been awarded a scholarship named after former prisoner of war Jessica Lynch.

Cherie Hartman, a junior pre-forensic and investigative sciences major in WVU’s Eberly College, was one of 26 West Virginia college students to receive a Jessica Lynch Foundation scholarship. Each of the recipients is the child of a member of the West Virginia National Guard.

The service of Hartman's father, Master Sgt. Jim Hartman, made her eligible for the scholarship. Her brother, Brad Hartman, a fellow WVU student, was also deployed for several months. Both have now returned home.

Cherie Hartman is a 1997 graduate of Elkins High School and is preparing for a career in law enforcement.

"I want to work with the FBI or as a crime scene investigator," she said. "I'm a big fan of 'CSI' and all the investigative programs on television. These shows, as well as a good friend who works for the FBI in Washington, D.C., motivated me to pursue this interest."

A single parent of two young children, Hartman was honored to be selected by the Jessica Lynch program. She appreciates the encouragement it provides for a nontraditional student such as herself. She also said she has long admired Lynch.

"When I met Jessica Lynch, she was down to earth, Hartman said. “She treated everyone equally. She even played games with my children. I am proud to be associated with such a fine young woman and such a fine representative of the state of West Virginia."

Each of the 26 students received a $200 award to help defray the costs and expenses of their education at the college or university of their choice. The scholarships represent a total gift from the Jessica Lynch Foundation of $5,200.

Lynch established the Foundation in 2003 to benefit children in need, particularly those with parents in the U.S. Armed Forces. It also has programs directed toward the benefit of West Virginians, particularly the citizens of Lynch's native Wirt County.

Since its inception, the Jessica Lynch Foundation has provided financial assistance and support to the WVU Children's Hospital and the National Military Family Association's

"Operation Purple" camp programs, purchased playground equipment in Wirt County and established a scholarship program for graduates of Wirt County High School.
