Service personnel in Iraq are seeing two different wars, according to Congressman Tom Osborne.
Nebraskans are seeing only one. The war that is shown on the news.
"The last two times I was in Iraq, I heard comments from soldiers that they see two different wars," Osborne said. "The one seen on CNN with the beheadings and the bombings, and the one they see. The average American doesn't realize what they are doing over there. They never see the positive things. Soldiers are doing good things and seeing progress."
Osborne cites an 80 percent increase in school attendance in Iraq. Most of the increase is due to girls being allowed to go to school. Three thousand schools have been renovated, and 30,000 teachers have been trained.
"Ninety-five percent of the children have been vaccinated for the first time in their lives," Osborne said. "The monthly income has doubled since last year. Small businesses are coming up and there are a million more cars on the road."
While traveling in Iraq, the soldiers Osborne talked with told him to come back home and tell people what they are doing.
Osborne said he believed that the scheduled elections in Iraq would take place.
"I will predict that there will be an election and a good turnout. And people will get hurt," he said.
"The Iraqi people are determined to have elections," Osborne said.
On his trips, Osborne said he visited with soldiers and Iraqi citizens.
"A variety of sources close to the situation tell me that positive things are happening," Osborne said.
"It's not all a bed of roses over there," he said. "Our military people have done a fabulous job."
