A bill aimed at restricting protest demonstrations at funerals won easy approval in the Indiana State Senate Thursday afternoon.

The vote sends the message that freedom of speech has limits, and the bill sets that limit at 500 feet. That's how far protesters must be from a funeral, procession or gravesite to avoid arrest.

Four of the group, from "The Kansas Church", apperared at a burial in my State about 2 weeks ago. The on-scene reporter would not show the placards the 4 protesters were holding; "they were just too terrible."
Veterans groups, along with a motorcycle group, were on hand to protect the grieving family as best they could, from the protesters. The protesters were fmembers of a Church in Kansas, which has become well known for their activity at these burials.

COMMENT From AII POW-MIA :: Although not directly POW-MIA related, should remains be repatriated for burial, this issue becomes one for consideration. What many folks are unaware of is the extreme measures some protest groups have gone to to disrupt funerals of KIA service personnel. Over the past few months, Greasy, among others, has kept us all up to date on the appalling antics of some hate groups that have gone to extraordinary lengths to disrupt services. To the point that Veteran organizations and veterans have started attending funerals en masse to provide a gauntlet of dignity, honor and grace for the fallen and their families.

It's just one of those outrages that cannot go without comment or be made public. END COMMENT

Hopefully other states will pass similar legislation; CNN had a piece on Paula Zahn Now a couple of days ago about this group-they have become infamous for picketing funerals of not only servicemembers, but the 12 Sago Mine explosion victims, AIDS patients, and even police officers! The piece also had the Freedom Riders (the vets on Harleys) who show up to protect the families from these crazies. 5-6 protesters vs. a hundred (or more) angry vets on Harleys.....guess who'd win that one...
Treat everyone you meet with kindness and respect, but always have ready a plan to kill them.
