That was my fear. During the first Gulf War, the Pentagon kept putting off officially declairing Melissa Rathbun-Neely MIA because they were afraid of what the public reaction would be, and this greatly angered her family. Right now CNN is downplaying this as a ticker tape item. This is the right thing to do now, because if it gets played up, more of it will happen later. Its not known yet who the soldiers are. But its still a bad thing if they are both men.

But I see what the guerillas are up to. They want to make it impossible for small two-person patrols to operate. US troops are already too thinly stretched. Making them bunch up into bigger groups makes it even harder to be everywhere.

The men and their Humvee had been stationed at an observation posted near the town of Balad, north of Baghdad, when they went missing Wednesday night, according to Pentagon officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The MIA's are men. Pray for them.

Meanwhile, Army troops searching for two missing soldiers found their Humvee early this evening, according to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity. The discovery came after soldiers had detained three men for questioning in the case, but the official said the Humvee showed no signs of blood or any immediate clue as to what had happened to the soldiers.

US Army Major Robert Gwinner earlier told AFP that military intelligence "believe Fedayeen (militia) were using it (the Humvee), trying to get close to Americans with the vehicle to probably conduct another terrorist attack." .... "The best intelligence reports we have right now is that it was Fedayeen," he said, referring to fighters still loyal to Saddam. Another soldier involved in the searches, Sergeant First Class Tyrone Paige, admitted Friday that US troops were "baffled" at how someone would be able to abduct US troops and their armoured vehicle.

The crew had two M16 rifles, a grenade launcher and a global-positioning unit, and were equipped to have radio and visual contact with nearby teams, the official said, adding that he did not know if any of that gear was missing. A sandstorm at the time made it hard to see, though it was not known if the storm contributed to the disappearance or to the other soldiers' not noticing that it was happening, the official said.
