Ma'am,

I am in the Alaska Air National Guard and a member of the 176 Security Forces Squadron, the Air Force version of your Army MP's. I also have a duty as a Firearms Instructor. In this small part of the ever so big puzzle, I get to reach out and, hopefully, make a difference to those going downrange. While I have ALWAYS taken my job and career seriously, I read your book and it has lit a fire that has persisted ever since I read it when it first came out. I tell all my students they have homework, to read your book. You wrote about how you are not a hero. Well, I must disagree with you young lady. You went through things that no creature on this earth should have to endure and you did it YOUR way. You never gave up. You fought and you persevered. You called the media out when they tried to make you someone your weren't. You have a daughter now and are doing what no one ever thought you could again.... walk. You do so with your head held high and you have not strayed from your country upbringing. While I do not have clout in your world, as a 19 + year veteran of the US Air Force and someone currently deployed to Iraq, I am very proud of you and what you've done. I teach your lessons learned from the M-16 series weapon system to all my students and caution them NOT to simply follow what the book says and to use common sense. I also impart never leave an Airmen, Soldier, Marine or Shipmate behind. Do not take things for granted and live each day to it's fullest. I have started my own business as a civilian Firearms Instructor and I also impart these lessons to as many civilians as I can. I think we, as a country need to listen to our hearts and loved ones more and the media and politicians less. My daughter lives with her mother down in your neck of the woods, in Julian, WV.... While I prefer Alaska, and you are welcome there anytime for some fishing with the wife and I, I can say your family does live in a very rich part of our country and they have unequivocally raised you right. May God continue to Bless You Jessica and Thank You.
