Jessica Lynch: 'No Regrets' About Army
Dominion Post | By J. Miles Layton | February 25, 2008
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - Moments before Army veteran Jessica Lynch gave a speech Feb. 23 at the Lakeview Resort, she said, "I am doing fine. Thank-you for asking."

On March 23, 2003, Lynch's 507th Army Maintenance Company convoy was in the Iraqi town of Nasiriyah when it took a wrong turn and was attacked. Eleven American Soldiers were killed and six were captured, including Lynch.

The five-foot, three-inch tall former supply clerk suffered two spinal fractures, nerve damage and a shattered right arm, right foot and left leg when her Humvee crashed during the firefight. Lynch, who walks with a slight limp, said her latest surgery was on her right foot in August. She doesn't have any feeling in her left foot.

Lynch said she and her brother Greg had always wanted to serve in the Army, and that she needed money for college.

Lynch said she never thought she would be in a combat situation, but shortly after Lynch enlisted in 2001, Sept. 11 changed everything.

"If I had known what was going to happen, things would have turned out differently and I would have just gone to college," she said.

Despite everything, Lynch said she would still join the Army and has "no regrets."

In the aftermath of the media spotlight, Lynch, now 24, attended West Virginia University, where she studied journalism. Lynch gave birth last year to a daughter, Dakota, and they live outside Parkersburg. Though Lynch was once engaged to former Army Sgt. Ruben Contreras, she now has a new boyfriend. She protects details about her private life, saying only she met him through family.

Lynch now is studying elementary education at WVU's Parkersburg campus, where she is taking a full course load. She says she will graduate at some point in the near future, but for now she is taking it one day at a time.

"My whole life now is getting up in the morning, going to school and taking care of my daughter," she said. "I guess I've learned a lot these past five years."

Lynch said the media spotlight has moved on, but people still remember what she did.

"I still get letters from people," she said. "Sometimes people ask me for my autograph and I get asked to make speeches. But things have definitely calmed down."

Nice post, Lara. Unfortunately, it seems like every other year Jessica has to have a surgery on that right foot. Still, it's good to see our trooper is still going strong. I'll bet on March 23rd, when the 5th anniversary of the attack on the 507th and her capture comes, we'll see how she's doing today on the various news channels, and see how little Dakota Ann (who may not be so little now) is growing.
Treat everyone you meet with kindness and respect, but always have ready a plan to kill them.

Good morning, all....

Is it great to see that she can continue her life as Jessie Lynch, and not so much any more as the former P.O.W. whose government placed her in the difficult position that saw her go to testify before Congress... smile.gif

I was there when Jessie was captured and found; with the attorney throughout the rescue operation. As a veteran from WV myself, I would like to meet Jessie and her family and catch up on what is going on... Does anyone have contact information for her?

Semper & Respectfully,

Kent
