"Widow of soldier in Jessica Lynch unit blasts Bush
March 25, 2004

On the first anniversary of the Iraqi attack on Private Jessica Lynch's Army unit, the widow of a soldier who died in the fight blasted President George Bush for "lying to America" to justify the Iraq war.

In bitter comments beside the grave of Army Specialist James Kiehl on Tuesday, Jill Kiehl accused Mr Bush of fabricating reasons to launch the invasion that toppled Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

"The evidence that's starting to come out now feels like he [Bush] was misleading us," Mrs Kiehl said, holding the couple's 10-month-old son Nathaniel, born seven weeks after his father died.

"It's almost as though he had things fixed so it would look like he needed to go to war," she said.

James Kiehl, 22, a computer engineer, was one of 11 members of the 507th Maintenance Company killed when their convoy took a wrong turn at Nasiriyah in southern Iraq on March 23, 2003, and was attacked by Iraqi fighters.

Seven others were captured, including Private Lynch, who was held for nine days before US troops rescued her from a hospital.

Several members of the unit, not including Private Lynch, attended the ceremony in Centre Point, north-west of San Antonio.

Mrs Kiehl described herself as "bitter" about Mr Bush's decision to declare war on Iraq.

"It's upsetting that he would have lied to America to get what he wanted," she said.

"In a way, it's like he used people. That's how I feel. I think the reasons for going over there were bogus and misleading."

Mr Bush justified the invasion on the grounds that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and was linked to al-Qaeda. So far, no such weapons have been found and little evidence of al-Qaeda connections has turned up.

Kicks,
Maybe I read it wrong but the article said Jessica did not attend the ceremony. I think it read "not including" Lynch.

Oops, you're right. I saw the part that said "Seven others were captured, including Private Lynch, " . I'll have to change my topic heading.

I wonder why they would point out that she didn't attend? dry.gif

She's the most public figure of all 9 POWs (I include Lori here), and the one who got the most publicity and the biggest windfall. Thus she's on the highest pedestal...and the most tempting target for media sniping.

I'm surprised -- given the deep friendship she had with Lori -- that the media didn't harp on her more for not being in Arizona yesteday. For me...she'll go when she's able to handle it...Lori's parents understand...that's enough for me. Besides...it's not MY emotions I have to deal with. I'm certain Jessica was in misery all of yesterday.

I'm sure Lori's family is very understanding. In one of the articles yesterday they mentioned that Lori's mother wore a picture during the ceremony of Lori and Jessica together. I'm sure that is the same picture that we've all seen so many times. I'm sure had Jessica attended yesterday's ceremony, it would have turned into a media circus. That's the last thing she would have wanted for the Piestewa's.

James is my cousin, and I'm glad Jill said all that. I'm happy she made a point about her opinions :]
